STILL SWINGIN’ (Kevin Mahogany, arranged by Tyrone Jackson & Lu Olutosin) Some folks work from 9 to 5 Trade their life for a line of jive Never had foresight to see Where the changes had to be Thought that they had got the word Thought it all died after Bird But we’re still swingin’ There are those who stayed around Came up with a brand new sound Miles would get the band to groove Play that music, make the people move Not everybody got the word Thought it all died after Bird But we’re still swingin’ Jazz has been around awhile Been kicked around but kept it’s style Picked up everything you hear To put some fresh sounds in your ear Not everybody got the word Thought it all died after Bird But we’re still swingin’ Now we’ve laid it out for you So what are YOU prepared to do Keep Jazz alive, Yes we can Break new ground, that’s our plan Not everybody got the word Thought it all died after Bird But we’re still swingin’

SKIN GAME (Granny Said it) ( Lu Olutosin, arranged by Tyrone Jackson) Hey there fellow, you just out for a spin? What’s that you’re covered in, Oh is that your skin? Well where I’m from is so hip, we just stopped using skin See, it kept getting in the way of all the people being friends Then a Strong wind came and blew away everybody’s skin And now, no matter who you are we can all be friends Strange storm, left no death and no destruction Just a Mountain of Skin and a new world for reconstructin’ MY Granny said everything changed that day Said she’d never go back to livin’ that ‘old-time’ way My Granny said it, I believe it, and that settles it. Don’t you try playing that Skin Game Who are you tryin’ to trick Well my Granny said, that game is dead And You’re just trying to be slick See Back in the day she was colored, her and all her kin That’s before the Storm hit, and when people still had Skin No one saw it coming back in 2025, my Granny was just a little girl But she would never tell me a lie Must have been the Storm of the century, Took off Everybody’s skin White and Red and Yellow and Black and Brown and - ALL the colors Now that they’re gone we get along with one another…... Male, Female, and the Other, Everybody with the SAME Rights If you try to play it backwards Buddy, you’re in for a fight My Granny said it, I believe it, and that settles it. Don’t you go playing that Skin Game Who are you tryin’ to trick Too late Granny said, that game is dead And You’re just trying to be slick ~ interlude~ That’s why I’m so puzzled when I look at you You come here wearing skin man, are you some kind of fool My Granny said it’s a Sin and a Shame For anyone to ever go around playing that old Skin Game Just get yourself together man, don’t wait another year What color am I you ask? Fool I’m CLEAR My Granny said it, I believe it, and No Matter what you say, that settles it. My Granny said it, I believe it, and believe you me , that settles it. Don’t you try playing that Skin Game Who are you tryin’ to trick Well my Granny said, that game is dead And You’re just trying to be slick

about

CD REVIEW

Lutalo “Sweet Lu” Olutosin is one of the most promising male jazz singers around town. He is far from a newcomer, having spent a long period in the military, but he displays a youthful enthusiasm in his vocals along with a mature and individual style. Based in Atlanta, he has a background in gospel music and early on was inspired by hearing Al Jarreau to pursue a career singing secular music. He has since mixed together aspects of jazz, r&b and such musical role models as Oscar Brown Jr. and Eddie Jefferson to form his own style.
Meet Me At The Crossroads, Sweet Lu Olutosin’s third CD as a leader, features him in prime form mostly singing his own originals. He is joined on the diverse set by pianist Tyrone Jackson, bassist Kevin Smith, and drummer Henry Conerway III with occasional contributions by tenor-saxophonist Mace Hibbard, trumpeter Lester Walker and background singer Crystal Monet. The great Donald Brown (an alumnus of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers) is the producer and also guests on piano on some selections.
Meet Me At The Crossroads begins with Kevin Mahogany’s “Still Swingin’” which pays tribute to swinging jazz both in the lyrics and in Sweet Lu’s colorful scat-singing. “Love You More Than You Ever Know” puts the focus on Olutosin’s powerful voice and ability to caress a soulful piece. His “How They Do That,” is about finding one’s purpose in life and staying focused on it despite the obstacles, is catchy and funky. “Sister Sadie’s Blues,” featuring Sweet Lu’s lyrics to Billy Strayhorn’s “Intimacy Of The Blues,” is boppish and bluesy with fine solos from Hibbard and bassist Smith.
“Skin Game (Granny Said It),” is a call for racial understanding based on the advice given to the singer by his grandmother years ago. “Dancea Swing A Nova” has the feel of a classic bossa nova and even a sly hint of “The Girl From Ipanema” during the keyboard solo. The assertive love song “You’ll Never Find” and the singer’s modern jazz original “Tunji Baby” (which discusses the dilemma of how to approach a woman who is above one’s class) precede the closer, “Don’t Forget To Remember,” which features his inventive lyrics to Joe Henderson’s “Recorda Me.”
Throughout Meet Me At The Crossroads, Sweet Lu Olutosin provides warm vocals, versatility and subtle creativity. His latest release is well worth exploring and savoring.
